How Dissolved Air Flotation Works

Dissolved Air Flotation – abbreviated as DAF – is one of the most effective and efficient ways to treat wastewater in a hygienic, safe, and reliable manner. Aerofloat has invested heavily in DAF and that has resulted in innovation – AeroDAF features patented design elements that mean lower maintenance of the DAF system than any other model on market. It also means that the AeroDAF system can be smaller (ideal for businesses in the heart of cities where space is at a premium), and can be delivered in a far more cost-effective manner.

The specifics of DAF

Dissolved Air Flotation is so effective because it uses very simple, natural systems to separate contaminants from water. Wastewater enters the DAF tank, where it is first mixes with dissolved air under pressurised circumstances. What this means is that the dissolved air forms into millions of small air bubbles which float upwards, “catching” and carrying dirty particles to the top of the tank.

At that point the water is effectively separated into two – a sludge of waste on the top of the tank, and the cleaned water sitting underneath. This is when, with most DAF systems, a mechanised scraper will remove the top layer of the sludge, allowing the cleaned water to be taken from the bottom.

AeroDAF’s system is a little different, however. It doesn’t feature those mechanised arms, which minimises the maintenance required of the system. And, while the AeroDAF is space efficient, it can still treat large amounts of water – the base system (Model Fifty) can treat 3,000 litres of wastewater per hour, while the Model 800 can treat up to 50,000 litres of waste water per hour. These systems are modular and can scale as a business needs them to.

Where DAF is the ideal solution

While there are other wastewater treatment solutions (including those offered by Aerofloat), DAF has a number of unique advantages that make it most appealing to a number of business types:

1)Maintenance is simple. For smaller businesses, maintaining wastewater is a regulatory requirement, but potentially a time-consuming and expensive one. AeroDAF’s innovation means that the systems run longer, with greater longevity, and help keep the costs down.

2)The system is sealed. What this means is that it’s odourless. Wastewater isn’t just a hygiene concern – it can also render workplaces uncomfortable or even impossible to work in. Aerofloat’s system keeps the odours and impact of the wastewater on the environment right down.

For this reason, AeroDAF is favoured within food processing, urban-based, and small businesses.
